We are continually amazed by the variety and quality of hotel meals. We make an extra effort to encourage hotel kitchens to serve us light healthy meals with a variety of courses. Vegetarians and people with specific dietary needs are always appropriately fed. People with allergies will be given a card in the foreign language describing their allergy for use in restaurants and cafés. We always share 2 or three memorable picnics in beautiful places and have some kind of celebratory meal at a fine restaurant or two.</text>

<text>Travel plans - We will make all travel arrangements for you and departures from most American cities are covered in the cost of the tour. Additionally, we can help you make post tour plans if you would like to extend your trip from any one of our destinations. Occasionally extended stays are possible at no extra cost besides room and board. We will gladly evaluate your travel plans and see what kind of package we can create for you.Hotels - As always, our priority is to spend money on seeing beautiful places rather than staying in luxurious hotels. But the hotels are carefully selected; you will find then clean, comfortable and well located. Accommodations will be in twin bedded or triple rooms unless you opt to pay a single room supplement of $300. The rooms will have showers or baths, except in London where they will be down the hall. We always stay in comfortable smaller hotels which are inside city centers rather than more expensive hotels set up for large groups situated far from old town centers. We may have to walk with our luggage through streets where buses cannot fit, but it will be a walk justified by the benefits of an excellent location.Buses - Our groups are limited to 25 so that we can spread out on buses designed for up to 48 people. Occasionally we will split groups onto 2 smaller buses so that we can go into areas wherelarge buses cannot travel, areas which most tour groups never see. We choose our bus drivers carefully and often enlist their creativity and knowledge of the area by asking them to take us home on the "Scenic Route." Some of our most interesting side trips have come from asking bus drivers where they take their families for the weekend. </text>

<text> In an industry full of anonymous travel companies and exorbitant tours we are trying to find groups of people who have a similar travel philosophy. We will always try to focus our tours on very specific areas or on literary or historical themes, a far cry from forgettable "13 countries in 13 days from the bus window" kinds of tours. Our tours will always remain as inexpensive as possible with group rates allowing for reduced prices, not company profits. We enjoy linking the places we visit with historical and literary connections. We don't simply tell you about things that happened in certain places, we read plays in the places they were purported to have happened, we give speeches in the theatres and have philosophical discussions where the ancient philosophers stood. These experiences are enjoyable and rich in learning. Visiting sites, especially ruins, is always much more interesting when you have some pertinent background information about the history, the architecture, the people and the climate or geography. We try to give you just enough information about each area before we arrive that you will find the visit much more interesting. Often we will use our time on the bus to give informal lectures about the places to which we are on route while pointing out interesting views on the way. Several times on each tour we will give optional evening lecture presentations on a variety of subjects relating to the tour. We have found that when we are moving around a site most people like to take their own pace, armed with information and a good map. Thus, we do not give "guided tours" of the things that we think are interesting, we give you the information necessary to search out that which interests you. However, you will always have the option of walking through sites with us as we explore and discuss. We also try to incorporate the expertise of the people on the tour to add to the content of the tour. In the past we have had fascinating insights from mathematicians, chemists, botanists, musicians, historians, entomologists and a host of other interesting people. <text><span class="style1"> Under the influence of Classical Greece, our travel club is named after Hermes, messenger of the gods, musician, mediator and patron of travelers. Over time we have come to realize that Hermes and Friends is not so much a travel company furnishing tours for the public but a club consisting of a large group of travelers past and present who come together to make the "Friends" in Hermes and Friends. This was no more evident than with our 1994 Provence tour where over 50% of the group had taken other tours with us, and almost all of the others came as friends or on the recommendation of past tour members. They have come from all over the world and several people have already been on three or four of our tours. One person even came on the same tour three times!A little History - Hermes and Friends began when Henry Matthews was a student at Cambridge University. With his partner Spyro Spyromilio he took Cambridge students for educational tours of Greece under the name of the Aegina Club. In the early 1980s Henry and Catherine Bicknell began taking tours again. They teamed up with Spyro, now director of Siva travel, Athens, for Greek offerings. They also planned English and French tours . The lineage continues - In 1990 their son Zachary came on board as assistant tour manager. In 1993 Catherine and Zac began taking groups together and Spyro turned his operations over to his son Miltos. For the 1994 Tour to Provence we added the expertise of Catherine's sister, Caroline, who acted as our local contact in the South of France and helped us with the preparation and running of the tour. Caroline's presence gave the tour a regional flavor which could never have been gained without the insights of a local. Similarly, Henry's sister Carolina acts as our local representative on the Greek Island of Amorgos, one of our favorite Greek stops. </span><span class="style7">Catherine Bicknell</span><span class="style1"> is a Graduate of the Royal College of Art, London. She has taught in both Architecture and Interior Design, and has run several study-abroad programs for design students in London. Currently she is teaching in the WSU University Honors Program. In 1987, she won the prestigious Burlington Northern Teaching Excellence Award at WSU. She is recognized internationally for her research on traditional housing of the Greek Islands and has gained recognition for her photography of the Greek isles. In 1985, Catherine co-led a tour of France for the Washington Commission for the Humanities and in 1987 she took a group to England. </span><span class="style7">Zachary Matthews</span><span class="style1">, Hermes And FriendsΓÇÖ Travel Manager, has accompanied several Hermes and Friends tours. He was assistant tour manager of Hermes and FriendsΓÇÖ 1990 Greek tour and co-lead the 93 & 94 tours with Catherine. A graduate of the WSU Honors Program, Zachary is now completing his Masters degree at the University of Southern California .A unique travel experience - We feel that Hermes and Friends tours fill in a gap in the travel industry with tours which are hand tailored to the needs of our discriminating travelers. <text><span class="style1"></span><span class="style7">Sun June 18th -</span><span class="style1"> Depart from various US Airports.</span><span class="style9">LONDON, St. Margaret’s Hotel, (3 Nights)</span><span class="style1"></span><span class="style7">Mon 19 - </span><span class="style1">Early in the morning we will arrive at London’s Gatwick Airport. We will do some gentle sightseeing as we drive through the center of London and will come together for a picnic in the hotel garden at dinner time.</span><span class="style7">Tues 20 & Wed 21 - </span><span class="style1">We will have these two days essentially free to acclimatize ourselves to the new time zone, do some sight seeing in the city and visit museums with collections relating to painting and literature in Provence. Catherine and Zac will lead a couple of walking tours allowing first time visitors an overview of London while others are free to explore the city on their own itineraries.</span><span class="style9">Arles - 3 nights</span><span class="style1"></span><span class="style7">Thurs June 22nd - </span><span class="style1">In the morning we will take a flight to Marseille airport where we will meet a bus for a scenic drive through the Provençal countryside to the town of Arles. We will arrive in time for a short stroll through the medieval streets before our first French meal at the Hotel.</span><span class="style7">Fri June 23d - </span><span class="style1">We will spend the morning exploring Arles which boasts fabulous Roman ruins including a theatre and an arena as well as several spectacular churches. We will split up for lunch in the numerous Cafés. In the afternoon we will take a bus tour through several picturesque villages, a magnificent church, a walled city and the famed Camargue, a nature preserve with a fascinating variety of animal and plant life. Upon return to Arles we will have dinner at the hotel.</span><span class="style7">Sat June 24th - </span><span class="style1">Today’s bus tour will take us to the feudal stronghold of les Baux and the remarkable Cathedrals d’Images. After lunch in a fine restaurant in the town of St. Remy we will visit the extensive roman ruins at Glanum and possibly stop in the town of Egalieres. You will be on your own for dinner at one of the many fine restaurants in Arles.</span><span class="style9">L'isle-sur-la Sorgue - 4 nights</span><span class="style1"></span><span class="style7">Sun June 25th - </span><span class="style1">We will take an early bus to L'isle-sur-la Sorgue for market day. You will be on your own to have lunch in a café or buy picnic ingredients from the numerous food stalls at the market. The afternoon will be spent at our hotel swimming in one of the two pools, walking the grounds, writing postcards and generally relaxing. After our hotel dinner we will come together for an optional talk about some of the sites we will be visiting the following day.</span><span class="style7">Mon June 26th -</span><span class="style1"> We will begin the day be driving to the famous papal city of Avignon. You will have the opportunity to visit the Popes Palace, the Bridge of Avignon, walk through the palace gardens or the modern city. Lunch will be a picnic taken at the famous Roman Bridge le Pont du Gard. After lunch we will visit the remarkable village of Usez. Dinner will be at the hotel.</span><span class="style7">Tues June 27th -</span><span class="style1"> In the morning we will come together for an optional lecture on Monasticism to highlight some of the ideas which have governed life at the Abbey of Senanque which we will be visiting in the afternoon. Our afternoon bus trip will begin at the spectacular Fontaine de Vaucluse, and will continue on to Senanque. After our hotel dinner you will be presented with a lecture detailing French wine making and some of the wine areas which we will be visiting the following day.</span><span class="style7">Wed June 28th - </span><span class="style1">We will begin our bus tour at the town of Orange where we will visit the beautifully preserved Roman theatre. Our lunch will be in a tavern in the town of Vaqueras, one of the fine wine growing villages in the Southern Rhone region. At lunch we will be able to taste some of the fine local wines. Our wine tasting tour will continue as we go on to visit the winery of Dominic Ay, one of the finest wine makers in the famous village of Gigondas. The cooperative at Rasteau will give us a look at wine making on a grander scale and a chance to taste some of their trademark desert wine. Dinner will be at the hotel.</span><span class="style9">St. Paul - 5 nights</span><span class="style1"></span><span class="style7">Thur June 29th - </span><span class="style1">This morning we will take a bus to our next hotel in the countryside near the village of Viens. On route we will pass through the beautiful towns of Lacoste, home of the disreputable Marquis de Sade, and Bonnieux. Dinner will be at the hotel.</span><span class="style7">Fri July 30th - </span><span class="style1">this day will be free to relax at pool side or go on a walking tour of the local countryside. A variety of options will be offered. Dinner will be at the hotel.</span><span class="style7">Sat July 1st -</span><span class="style1"> This morning we will go the market day in the town of Apt. Again lunches will be found in the market. We will visit some characteristically beautiful villages on the way back to the hotel for dinner.</span><span class="style7">Sun July 2nd -</span><span class="style1"> On this day we will take a bus tour up into the foothills of the Alpille mountains. We will stop at Salagon, a famous medieval herb garden and Benedictine Priory. We will stop for a café lunch in the town of Forqualquier. In the afternoon we will arrange a visit to the remarkable ochre mines at Roustrel Colorado. Dinner will be at the hotel</span><span class="style7">Mon July 3d -</span><span class="style1"> Today we will make a tour of some of the most beautiful villages of the Luberon area. We will also visit the impressive feudal stronghold of Buoux. The day will be free to explore this remarkable lively town. Suggestions and walking tours will be made available. Provence and the Luberon area have recently gained recognition through the Peter Mayal’s books </span><span class="style9">A Year in Provence, Toujours Provence</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style9">Hotel Pastis </span><span class="style1">. Provence is famous for its history, its food and wine and the uncomplicated life style of its residents. We will try to see this attractive area in a way that most tourists never do. Our time will be divided between major sites and exploration of the food, culture and countryside of this enchanting place. Serious sight seeing is balanced with time to explore old towns and villages and a chance to relax in cafés and beside swimming pools. Traveling early in the season, we will be there just before the European tourist season begins, the sites will not be too crowded and we will enjoy traditional French hospitality. </span><span class="style7">"Friends, Romans, countrymen . . . "</span><span class="style1"> Settled by the Greeks in the 6th Century BC and subsequently conquered by the Romans, there are many ancient sites which are well worth visiting. Any trip to Provence would not be complete without seeing the remarkable Roman bridge,</span><span class="style7"> le Pont du Gard</span><span class="style1"> which was part of an immense water system bringing water from high in the mountains to military settlements miles away. Having survived earthquakes, floods and many years of war, the Pont du Gard is a testament to the magnificent engineering of the Romans. We will visit the ruins and monuments of a thriving Roman settlement, </span><span class="style7">Glanum</span><span class="style1">, near </span><span class="style7">St. Remy</span><span class="style1">. We will also stop at the superbly preserved theatre in the town of </span><span class="style7">Orange</span><span class="style1"> in the heart of the Rhone's Wine country.</span><span class="style7">Thousands of years of History -</span><span class="style1"> Of the centuries following the departure and assimilation of the Romans there is substantial evidence of successive historical eras, periods of intense religious importance, of warlike feudal lords, as well as periods of peace and prosperity. We will share with you a comprehensive overview of the most important moments in Provençal history through visits to the Papal city of </span><span class="style7">Avignon</span><span class="style1">, the feudal strongholds of </span><span class="style7">Buoux</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style7">les Baux</span><span class="style1"> - home of the famed troubadours and courts of love. We will visit magnificent cathedrals and churches in </span><span class="style7">Arles, St. Gilles, L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style7">Aix</span><span class="style1">. We will also visit the austere monastery in the abbey of </span><span class="style7">Senanque</span><span class="style1">, surrounded by fragrant lavender fields, and the famed mediéval gardens in the Benedictine priory of </span><span class="style7">Salagon</span><span class="style1">. We will stop in </span><span class="style7">Les-Stes.-Maries-de-la-Mer</span><span class="style1"> to visit the shrine dedicated to the arrival of Mary Magdelaine, Mary Jacoby, Mary Salome and the risen-from-the-dead Lazarus on Provençal soil in AD 40.</span><span class="style7">Delightful villages</span><span class="style1"> - Most of modern Provence is sprinkled with small towns and villages. Our travels will take us through many of the more beautiful towns and we will plan stops in some of the more enchanting places. These will include, among others, the </span><span class="style7">Duchy of Uzes, Lacoste</span><span class="style1"> - home of the disreputable Marquis de Sade, </span><span class="style7">Bonnieux, Forqualquier</span><span class="style1">, and the magnificently walled town of </span><span class="style7">Aigues-Mortes</span><span class="style1"> from which the 7th Crusade was launched by King Louis IX.</span><span class="style7">Food, Food, Food - </span><span class="style1"> Unlike the rich creamy food of Northern France, Provençal cooking shows it's Mediterranean heritage by it's use of fresh herbs, fragrant oils, fresh vegetables, garlic, delicious goat cheeses and seasonal greens. Many people will be surprised to notice that Provençal cooking is simple, elegant and fits very well into our idea of a healthy diet. Picnics are a delight of shared ingredients spread on freshly baked bread and many meals can be enjoyed with a wide variety of local wines. A continental breakfast will be provided every morning and dinner provided on all but four nights. You will be on your own for most lunches. This will give you the opportunity to explore the many possibilities of Provençal food. Serious gastronomes will delight in the variety of food and the care taken in preparation. And, of course, lovers of French wine will have many opportunities to sample the multitude of fine Southern Rhone wines as they taste before they are shipped to America. We will even spend a day tasting the superb wines of </span><span class="style7">Gigondas</span><span class="style1">, </span><span class="style7">Chateauneuf-du-Pape</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style7">Rasteau</span><span class="style1">, learning how and where they are made. You will be surprised by the high caliber of our hotel meals, with individual chefs taking great care with each menu and personal pride in the satisfaction of a beautifully prepared meal. Our gastronomic experience will culminate with a celebratory meal at one of the finest restaurants in the South of France, </span><span class="style7">Le Clos-de-la-Violette</span><span class="style1"> in Aix.</span><span class="style7">Traditional outdoor markets -</span><span class="style1"> For centuries the Provençals have been buying their food and household wares in outdoor markets where stalls of herbs fragrance the air and the vibrant color of traditional fabrics adorn a multitude of stalls. We will visit a couple of these markets to purchase picnic materials and shop for souvenirs and gifts.</span><span class="style7">Art & Literature -</span><span class="style1"> Artists and writers have been drawn to Provence for centuries to admire her various charms. The mistral wind, which blows over the area for much of the year, has the delightful effect of clearing everything from the air, leaving a clarity of vision, sparkling light and bright color which has become famous the world over. Made famous by the paintings of </span><span class="style7">Van Gogh, Gaugin</span><span class="style1"> and Aix resident </span><span class="style7">Paul Cézanne</span><span class="style1"> we will visit some of the scenes they painted and will go to Cézanne's studio which has been preserved just as he left it.</span><span class="style7">Natural wonders - </span><span class="style1"> The scenery alone should be mentioned as a highlight of any trip to Provence. Herb scented hills, alternating fields of wheat and Lavender, running streams and forested areas dot the countryside and have brought visitors to Provence for centuries. We will be sure to stop the bus for Kodak moments as we pass fields of glowing sunflowers, remarkable vistas and areas of unsurpassed natural beauty. We will visit the magically colored hills of </span><span class="style7">Roustrel Colorado</span><span class="style1">, where ochre was mined for many years, and the phenomenal </span><span class="style7">Fontaine-de-Vaucluse</span><span class="style1">, where the entire volume of the Sorgue river comes rushing out of the side of a mountain.</span></text>

<text><span class="style6">Mon, May 15 - </span><span class="style5">Depart from various US Airports.</span><span class="style10">LONDON, St. MargaretΓÇÖs Hotel, (2 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Tue 16 -</span><span class="style5"> Early in the morning we will arrive at LondonΓÇÖs Gatwick Airport. If the weather is fine, we will defy jet lag by visiting historic Hever Castle for a picnic and some gentle sightseeing before returning to the city for a bus tour as we make our way into the center of London. We will come together for a picnic in the hotel garden at dinner time.</span><span class="style6">Wed 17 -</span><span class="style5"> We will visit the British Museum, a five-minute walk from the hotel, where we will see much of the sculpture which was removed from the Parthenon. In the afternoon Catherine and Zac will lead a couple of walking tours allowing first time visitors an overview of London while others are free to explore the city with their own itineraries.</span><span class="style10">ATHENS, Athens Gate Hotel, (2 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Thurs 18 -</span><span class="style5"> Our flight to Athens will get us there in time for dinner at the hotel which has a view of the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. After dinner we will have the opportunity to take a walk through the lively Plaka, the heart of the old town. </span><span class="style6">Fri 19 - </span><span class="style5">Our sightseeing will continue with a visit to the famed Acropolis of Athens. We will take you through the sacred precinct and through the Agora, the ancient marketplace and civic center. Lunch will be in an open-air taverna in the Plaka allowing us to introduce you to traditional Greek cuisine. Your afternoon will be free to explore many of the other sights of Athens. As always, we will make suggestions for those who would like direction toward recommended museums and sites. Dinner will be at the hotel. </span><span class="style10">NAFPLION, (2 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Sat 20 - </span><span class="style5">Here we begin our 6 day bus tour of the mainland. After crossing the spectacular Corinth Canal we will visit the ancient city of Corinth. After a stop for lunch and swimming at Tolon Beach we will visit the ancient theater at Epidaurus, the best preserved in the Greek world. Our final destination will be the charming port town of Nafplion. Dinner will be at the hotel.</span><span class="style6">Sun 21 - </span><span class="style5">A short drive from Nafplion, we will visit the citadels of Mycenae and Tiryns, homes of the legendary Homeric heroes of the Trojan War. Your afternoon will be free to explore the charms of Nafplion including an optional hike up to the Venetian Castro overlooking the port. Dinner will be at the hotel.</span><span class="style10">OLYMPIA</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Mon 22 -</span><span class="style5">This will be our longest day of travel so we will break it up with several interesting stops along the way. We will visit the ancient theatre at Megalopolis as we travel through the mountains and famed pastures of Arcadia on our way to the temple of Apollo at Bassae. We will stop in picturesque Andritsena for a traditional taverna lunch and then drive on to Olympia for the night. Dinner will be at the hotel. After dinner activities abound in this lively town, including an optional visit to a taverna boasting traditional Greek dancing.</span><span class="style10">DELPHI, (2 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Tues 23 - </span><span class="style5">We will spend the morning visiting the place where the Olympic Games were celebrated in honor of Zeus for over 1000 years. After crossing the Gulf of Corinth by ferry and driving along its northern shore, there will be time for a quick swim before reaching the slopes of Mount Parnassus and the site of the Delphic Oracle. Dinner will be at the Hotel.</span><span class="style6">Wed 24 -</span><span class="style5"> We will spend a leisurely day visiting the extensive sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi as well as the modern town. Dinner will be at the Hotel.</span><span class="style10">SANTORINI, (3 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Thurs 25 - </span><span class="style5">On route from Delphi to Athens we will visit the marvelous Byzantine Monastery of Ossios Loukas where we will share a picnic, and then on to Athens airport for a flight to the beautiful Cycladic island of Santorini.</span><span class="style6">Fri 26, & Sat 27 - </span><span class="style5">We will have two days of free time on Santorini. The amazing geology of this beautiful volcanic island may give a clue to the end of Atlantis and the destruction of the Minoan Civilization of Crete. We will stay in Thira, a picturesque cliff village with numerous charms. We will take a half day bus tour of the island including stops at the amazing Minoan ruins at Acrotiri, a local winery, one of the famous black beaches and other sights. The beautiful villages and beaches offer many opportunities for photography and souvenir buying.</span><span class="style10">NAXOS, (3 Nights) (Island schedule may change with the somewhat erratic boat schedules.)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Sun 28 -</span><span class="style5">An early morning departure will take us to SantoriniΓÇÖs dramatic port as we board a large ferry to the island of Naxos.</span><span class="style6">Mon June 29, & Tues 30 - </span><span class="style5">We will have two free days on Naxos to climb the ancient Castro, visit the ruins of a temple, or relax on the beach. Naxos boasts wonderful food and shopping and the famous beaches allow for excellent swimming and boat/wind surfer rental. There will be a guided bus trip around the island to see villages, museums and an unfinished statue of Apollo still lying in the stone quarry. You will be on your own for dinners, giving you an opportunity to experience the variety of the local cuisine.</span><span class="style10">AIYIALI(5 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Wed 31 - </span><span class="style5">We will take a morning ferry to the island of Amorgos. Dinner will be with our island hosts at the beach-side hotel of Lakki.</span><span class="style6">Thurs 1-Sun 4 - </span><span class="style5">The Cycladic island of Amorgos is one of the most interesting and beautiful, but is little known and has not been spoiled by tourism. You will be staying on a sandy beach in a group of simple rooms among vines and fruit trees. There will be time to explore the mountain villages and relax on the beaches. Two evening meals will be provided by the sea and two in the mountain village of Langatha. One of these will be at Catherine and ZacharyΓÇÖs own house, a typical old stone house they have restored. The other will be at the village bakery, where you will experience the traditional Easter Feast (slightly out of season) accompanied by island musicians and followed by traditional Greek dancing. There will be optional guided walks and a trip to a 9th century monastery at the other end of the island.</span><span class="style10">ATHENS, Athens Gate Hotel, (3 Nights)</span><span class="style5"></span><span class="style6">Mon 5 - </span><span class="style5">A final ferry ride will take us to Piraeus, the port of Athens. If our arrival in Athens is too late for dinner at the hotel we will bring picnic supplies onto the boat.</span><span class="style6">Tues 6 & Wed 7 - </span><span class="style5">We will have two free days for shopping and to visit the museums and sites. The national Archaeological museum is especially recommended. This should prove to be a good day for theater and other last minute sight seeing.</span><span class="style6">Fri 9 - </span><span class="style5">We will depart from Gatwick Airport and arrive in the US in the evening of the same day. Our aim in planning the tour is to revisit the best of Greece at an affordable price. Time will be divided between the major classical sites on the Greek mainland and some of the Aegean Islands. Serious sight seeing is balanced with time to explore old towns and villages and relax on the beaches. -Hotels will always be in town centers or on beaches. Traveling early in the season, we could experience the beautiful Greek landscape, still green and full of spring flowers. As we will be there long before the European tourist season begins, we will have the distinct advantage of visiting many of the sites without the usual hordes of tourists.Ancient Greece -Minoan CivilizationCentered in Knossos on Crete, Minoan Civilization is marked as one of the earliest developed civilizations in the foundation of Western culture. We will have the remarkable opportunity of visiting the excavations at </span><span class="style7">Acrotiri</span><span class="style1">, a Minoan community on Santorini which was destroyed by the eruption of this volcanic island around 1628 BC, giving us clues as to the destruction of mythological Atlantis. While the eruption destroyed the Bronze Age community, the layers of ash and pumice preserved the town and numerous artifacts, among them spectacular wall paintings which we will have an opportunity to see in the </span><span class="style7">National Archeological Museum</span><span class="style1">.Mycenean Civilization -The mythological Greece of Homer reveals itself in the dramatic ruins at </span><span class="style7">Mycenae</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style7">Tyrins</span><span class="style1">. It is easy to see how rulers were able to repel invasion from these magnificent hill fortresses as far back as 2500 BC. From 1600-1100 BC, Mycenae was the capital of Aegean civilization on the Greek mainland. According to Homer it was during this time that Mycenae's most famous king, Agamemnon, sailed his forces to Troy to avenge the theft of his brothers wife, Helen. Regarded as myth for hundreds of years, Heinrich Schliemann's discovery of Mycenae in 1876 suggested a historical basis of Homer's epics The Illiad and The Odyssey .Classical Greece -At the height of Greek culture, beginning in the 6th Century BC, numerous city states vied for dominance with each other and developed to an unprecedented level of sophistication. Temples, and market places dominated urban communities, the most famous of which was </span><span class="style7">Athens</span><span class="style1">, our first Greek stop. Having seen much of it's sculpture in the </span><span class="style7">British Museum</span><span class="style1"> in London we will visit the, </span><span class="style7">Acropolis</span><span class="style1"> upon which sits the most famous of all symbols of Classical Greece, the </span><span class="style7">Parthenon</span><span class="style1">. We will also visit the remarkable </span><span class="style7">Propylea</span><span class="style1">, the </span><span class="style7">Temple of Athena Nike</span><span class="style1">, the </span><span class="style7">Erectheum</span><span class="style1">, the Ancient </span><span class="style7">Agora</span><span class="style1"> - Athens's ancient Marketplace, the</span><span class="style7"> Theatre of Dionysus</span><span class="style1"> and the later Roman </span><span class="style7">Odeum</span><span class="style1">. Other sites from this Classical period which we will visit are </span><span class="style7">Corinth</span><span class="style1">, the powerful trading city; </span><span class="style7">Olympia</span><span class="style1">, the site of the original Olympic Games from 776 BC until they were outlawed by the early Christians in AD 394; the </span><span class="style7">Temple of Olympian Zeus</span><span class="style1"> in Athens; </span><span class="style7">Epidaurus</span><span class="style1">, a healing spa dedicated to Asclepius, boasting the best preserved theatre of ancient Greece; the </span><span class="style7">Temple of Apollo at Bassae</span><span class="style1"> situated in the dramatic hills of Arcadia; and another temple dedicated to Apollo on the island of Naxos. We will also visit </span><span class="style7">Delphi</span><span class="style1"> on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Considered the most sacred of Ancient Greek religious centers, the massive shrine, sacred to Apollo, was made famous as the Delphic Oracle pronounced prophetic verses for centuries. Consulted by Socrates, Oedipus and leaders from many countries, the Delphic Oracle features prominently in many Ancient Greek Myths.Christian Greece -We will have the opportunity to visit several Churches from the Byzantine period including the magnificent church of </span><span class="style7">Ossios Loukas</span><span class="style1"> with it's remarkable golden mosaics. Also an optional trip for adventuresome travelers will be taken to the famous 9th century </span><span class="style7">Monastary of Khozoviotissa</span><span class="style1"> on the island of Amorgos. Greek Orthodox churches are numerous and the extensive patronage of saints is manifested in small shrines which dot the landscape. Throughout our travels we will have the opportunity to visit churches, where appropriate.Modern Greece -Our travels through Greece will take us to many beautiful and interesting places. The modern city of </span><span class="style7">Athens</span><span class="style1"> has a great deal to offer from exciting night clubs to fantastic museums and superb restaurants. Our recommendations will include the Museum of Folk arts, the National Archeological Museum, the traditional dance program of the Dora Stratou Dance Company, Constitution Square and the lively Plaka. We will stay nights in the towns of </span><span class="style7">Olympia, Delphi</span><span class="style1"> and the lovely port town of </span><span class="style7">Nafplion</span><span class="style1">, all of which offer delightful restaurants, regional arts and crafts and numerous other things to see and do.The Islands - Our Island journey begins on </span><span class="style7">Santorini</span><span class="style1">, arguably one of the most beautiful places on earth. With it's amazing geology and picturesque villages a bus tour of the island will take us to the archeological wonders of </span><span class="style7">Acrotiri</span><span class="style1">, a vista from the highest point of the island and black and red beaches. On our own we will visit the charming towns of </span><span class="style7">Fira</span><span class="style1"> and </span><span class="style7">Oia</span><span class="style1">. Following three nights on Santorini we will take a boat to </span><span class="style7">Naxos</span><span class="style1">. Famous for it's wonderful food and delightful beaches, Naxos will be an excellent place for us to relax a bit after the rigors of our earlier sight seeing trips. We will take a bus tour of the island which will take around the island to see some beautiful villages, a delightful folk art museum, lunch on a remote beach and a visit to an unfinished statue of Apollo which still lies in the stone quarry. Finally we will make our way to the magical island of </span><span class="style7">Amorgos</span><span class="style1"> which is little known and has not been spoiled by tourism. There will be time to explore the mountain villages and relax on the beaches. Two evening meals will be provided by the sea and two in the mountain village of Langatha. One of these will be at Catherine and ZacharyΓÇÖs own house, a typical old stone house they have restored. The other will be at the village bakery, where you will experience the traditional Easter Feast (slightly out of season) accompanied by island musicians and followed by traditional Greek dancing. There will be optional guided walks and a trip to a 9th century monastery at the other end of the island. You will be staying on a sandy beach in a group of simple rooms among vines and fruit trees. The accommodation will be quite simple. A continental breakfast will be provided every morning and dinner is provided every night except for our three nights on Naxos an on two of the London nights. Some lunches will be provided at restaurants, there will be some picnics and four meals on planes, so you will not need to spend very much extra on food while having some chances to choose your own restaurants. Hotel and transportation arrangements in Greece are made by Siva Travel, an agency started by Henry Matthews and Spyro Spyromilio while they were undergraduates at Cambridge. In 31 years they have gained a lot of experience, and today they specialize in individual travel and university groups.
